about

Cassini continued to study the Saturn system until September 5 2017. In the last few months, due to a dwindling fuel supply, the spacecraft entered the Grand Finale phase of its mission.

A number of risky passes through the gap between Saturn and its inner ring were performed in order to maximize Cassini's science returns before the orbiter's intentionally destruction by diving into Saturn's atmosphere. This planned deorbit is necessary to mitigate the risk of the spacecraft eventually colliding with and contaminating one of Saturn's moons.

The music of this track is the oldest of all on this album (early 2016). It was meant to be included on my other CD I'm working on simultaneously (see also Dione). However, I never was able to find a lyric fitting the tune and the concept of that album. When listening to it in June 2017 I suddenly realized that it would make a good closer for this album instead and the lyrics came almost immediately when I made them reflect the end of Cassini's mission. I added the vocals, remixed the track slightly and added the decaying sounds at the end of the track, which represent the loss of signal after Cassini's dive into Saturn's atmosphere. Unlike Dione (Floating), there will not be another version on the other album.

lyrics

I left the earth many years ago
A flight through endless empty space
The destination: the planet saturn
A beautiful place

When I arrived I showed what I saw
Wondrous sights never seen before
Moons and rings circling around
The mother planet

But now the journey is almost at its end

On Titan my companion left me
To explore the winds and the seas
The first ever to land on this moon
He made history

But now my end is getting near
Past the rings into the atmosphere
In gravity's crush I transmit to you
My last goodby

Goodbye
